Abstract: David Hume and Immanuel Kant were both political philosophers of remarkable originality, subtlety and profundity, and yet their contributions in the area of political philosophy are largely unrecognized. This article attempts to present a convincing case that the neglect is extremely unfortunate and ought not to be allowed to persist among serious teachers and scholars in the area of legal, social and political philosophy. This article surveys the main points of contention between Hume and Kant with respect to their treatment of social or original contract theory. It attempts to show that their conflicts are very deep. If nothing else, they show the conceptual dependence of social and political philosophy upon moral philosophy and are worth exploring for that reason. |
