Abstract: The Carnegie Foundation’s Educating Lawyers: Preparation for the Profession of Law encouraged law schools to take an active role in the professional identity formation of their students. Acquiring a professional identity requires learning more than the doctrine and practical skills needed to perform the tasks of a lawyer, but also involves developing an understanding of the values, norms, and perspectives needed to interact with other lawyers and with clients, to make decisions impacting clients, and to determine what constitutes appropriate and ethical behavior. In my Contract Drafting and Negotiating course, I provide my students with the opportunity to develop their ethical professional identities through the use of two different role-playing exercises, which I describe in detail in this short article.
