Abstract:

This chapter proceeds in three parts. Part I analyses the 1986 Coordinated Framework for the regulation of biotechnology, its successes and failures, and the precedent that it provides for the regulation of nanotechnology. Part II summarizes the actions that have been taken to date by the three primary US agencies active in the regulation of nanotechnology – the US Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA), the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). Finally, Part III discusses a series of generic problems and tensions that have already been encountered in deliberations on nanotechnology regulation in the United States.
