Abstract:

In this short book chapter, Professor Sylvester explores the legal and symbolic legacies of the Nuremberg trials and compares them to current discussions about the trial of such figures as Saddam Hussein. The chapter concludes that Nuremberg's focus on symbolic legitimacy is a substantial factor in its continued importance and urges modern day prosecutions to seek symbolic as well as formalistic legitimacy.
