Abstract:

Law school admissions personnel frequently compute an index of numbers based upon the Law School Admissions Test scores and under graduate grade point averages, and sort applicants according to this index. This study addresses the question of whether a more useful index could be constructed from a formula that reflects variations among undergraduate institutions – variations in the quality of the student body, the excellence of the education, or the prevalence of high grades for average work. Despite a series of unsuccessful attempts at grade adjustment by previous researchers, this article exhibits a new method of adjusting grades earned at undergraduate institutions that seems to enhance the accuracy of predictions of first year law school grades, at least as to the two most recent graded classes at our law school. This method is both conceptually simple and easy to implement with existing admissions information.
